Virtual reality is becoming increasingly popular in the gaming community. New VR headsets like the Meta Quest 2 have low price points and large libraries of games that make them enticing options for gamers. Some of the most popular headsets have sold millions of units, earning a significant amount of money for their respective companies.
Which virtual reality companies have made the most revenue? That number can be difficult to pinpoint, as most companies do not announce complete virtual reality headset sales numbers or break down their revenue by VR headset sales. However, companies sometimes do release general sales numbers, and analysts are skilled at making estimates on numbers of units sold.
The VR Space team looked at available sales estimates to determine how much revenue some of the most popular VR companies have made off of their headsets.
While exact numbers are not available, it’s estimated that the Meta Quest 2 (formerly known as the Oculus Quest 2) is one of the most popular VR headsets ever made. It’s estimated to have sold more than 10,000,000 units, and at a retail price of $299, that amounts to $2,990,000,000 in revenue for Meta (formerly Facebook). The Quest 2 was released in 2020, replacing the original Quest headset. It can be used both as a standalone headset and connected to Oculus-compatible VR software on a desktop computer.
Another popular virtual reality headset is PlayStation VR. This headset, which was released in 2016, is compatible with both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 and has made at least $1.5 billion in revenue for Sony. The PlayStation VR 2 is in development now and will likely be released at the end of 2022 or in early 2023.
The HTC Vive is another popular headset. It was released in 2016 in partnership with the Valve Corporation. It’s unique because it uses room-scale virtual reality, meaning that users can walk freely around the room as opposed to sitting or standing in a stationary position. While it has sold considerably fewer units than the Quest 2 and PlayStation VR, its higher price point has made more than $1 billion in revenue for HTC.
Another popular VR headset is the Valve Index, though no recent sales numbers or estimates have been released. It has a much higher price point than other available headsets. It’s estimated that the headset sold 149,000 units in 2019 alone, the year it was released.
Choosing the right virtual reality goggles or headset depends on what you intend to use this equipment for. Many people are torn between PlayStation VR versus Quest 2, two of the biggest VR brands on the market right now. Both are affordable and have a variety of video games available.
Developers are creating more and more games highlighting the unique features of virtual reality that make for compelling gaming experiences. From original titles to VR versions of popular titles, these are some of the top virtual reality games out right now:
These VR headset games are great options for experienced gamers and newcomers alike. While there is some debate over which VR headset is the best, all options will provide a one-of-a-kind gaming experience.
