Your Way to Fitness: The Ultimate VR Boxing Game Guide

Boxing games have always been popular in the video game industry, and that’s never been more true than in virtual reality. VR boxing games offer players the chance to experience the feeling of real-world boxing without the pain you feel on the receiving end of a punch. No longer do you have to mash buttons in the perfect combo to get the right hit on your opponent; now, you can throw punches like you’re actually boxing and the controller acts as an extension of your hands in the virtual world. Virtual reality boxing is not a perfect re-creation of the actual sport, as some movements are often simplified to accommodate the limits of current technology. But despite that, many of these games still offer a realistic representation of boxing that’s great for having fun and reaching your fitness goals.

Some of the most popular and highly-regarded VR boxing apps include:

  • The Thrill of the Fight: This is the best-rated boxing game currently available in VR. It’s similar to real boxing in that it takes a significant amount of blows and force to beat your opponents, and this means that it can get repetitive at times, but unlike other games, it does well at showing the force of your attacks.
  • BoxVR: This virtual reality boxing game provides a great workout, as it is more of a fitness game than a strictly boxing game. It uses music-based time mechanics to deliver a serious workout with jabbing and punching and has more than 20 hours of choreographed routines.
  • Virtual Boxing League: This VR boxing simulator is at the intersection of boxing and arcade games. It features five opponents and levels of difficulties to master before you’ve completed the main game, but it also has mini-games that offer even more challenges. The biggest draw this game has to offer is that it has multiplayer capabilities, so friends can play against each other to punch, jab, and dodge while building personal fighting styles to carve out the edge they need to win.
  • Knockout League: Unlike the other entries on this list, Knockout League isn’t a serious boxing simulator. It’s designed to be a fun and goofy arcade-style VR boxing game that’s perfect for people who loved the Punch-Out!! games. It features a colorful cast of zany characters with their own unique attacks and styles along with plenty of humor and charm, but that doesn’t mean not to expect a workout from it. It’s fun, but it still packs a punch.
  • The Fastest Fist: This game is the perfect intersection between The Thrill of the Fight and BoxVR. It’s a high-intensity boxing simulator that also provides a great workout. You’ll work with a trainer who holds up bags for you to punch and also throws jabs and punches that you need to dodge.

If you’re a gamer, you probably already have a good idea of what types of games you enjoy, but your tastes can end up being quite different when you’re playing in virtual reality. Quest 2 games in the horror genre can be particularly tricky: You might enjoy jump scares on a screen in front of you, but when you’re inside of the action, it feels a lot more real and can be a lot more terrifying.

On the other hand, some games that might seem just OK on a flat screen come to life in new and exciting ways in VR. Quest game reviews can help you determine which apps are worth a download and which you should scroll by. To get you started, we’ve put together a list of VR Oculus Quest 2 games that are consistently rated as some of the most enjoyable apps on the market.

Population: One

Population: One

Some may write off this VR game for the Quest 2 as just another Fortnite clone, but while Population: One is a battle royale game, it’s much more than that. In this game, you and your teammates are dropped into a hostile environment with the goal of being the last group standing. But unlike in other battle royale games, every surface is climbable, opening up a world of tactical possibilities. Thanks to the immersive environment and tight controls, it’s a smooth-running and exciting game.

Pistol Whip

Pistol Whip

This VR game for Oculus headsets is designed to make you feel like an action hero in a world that’s stunning to look at. Surrounded by an intense soundtrack, you’ll feel like you’re the superspy the game makes you out to be while you shoot enemies to the beat of the music. While Pistol Whip is great entertainment, it’s also a great workout, since you have to dodge and squat out of the way when your enemies try to shoot you.

Beat Saber

Beat Saber

When it comes to VR Games for the Oculus, Beat Saber is easily one of the most popular. It’s easy to learn, and because it’s available across VR platforms, you can play with friends on different VR devices. Beat Saber comes with dozens of pre-installed songs, and you can also buy add-on packages of songs by some of your favorite artists.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

The Walking Dead is more than just a hit TV show; it’s spawned a variety of video games, and Saints & Sinners is one of the more immersive and interactive of the VR Quest 2 games out there. This survival horror game is not only one of the best VR zombie games, but it also provides a realistic setting with plenty of moral choices to agonize over that could potentially change the story.

Star Wars: Squadrons

Star Wars: Squadrons

This game puts you right in the cockpit of a perfectly replicated X-Wing or TIE Fighter. Squadrons doesn’t follow any of the Star Wars movies, so you won’t be given the opportunity to destroy the Death Star. However, that doesn’t make the game any less thrilling.

Until You Fall

Until You Fall is one of the more popular VR Quest games for fans of action and adventure. This game allows you to master your own fighting style with a combination of melees and magic so that no two people will battle in exactly the same way. You can fight corrupted humans, monstrous creatures, and unknown horrors as you traverse through a once-innocuous neon world.

A Fisherman’s Tale

Winner of the VR Game of the Year award in 2019, this VR game for the Quest 2 is a charming yet intuitive puzzle adventure with enough twists to leave you wondering where the game will go next. Play as a fisherman puppet living alone in a tiny cabin who quickly discovers that reality isn’t what it seems.

Moss

Unlike many other VR Oculus games available, in Moss, you play the role of “The Reader” as opposed to the main character, so you’re watching everything unfold in front of you. Moss is lovingly rendered to look like a Studio Ghibli movie brought to life, but you can interact with the world as you help the main character on her quest.

Skyrim

Skyrim may be ten years old now, but it’s still as popular as it was when it was first released. This VR game for Oculus from Bethesda takes advantage of the medium to portray its great story on an epic scale that allows you to explore an open fantasy world while you slay dragons and complete quests.

Superhot VR

This VR game for the Oculus Quest 2 is an incredibly rewarding shooting experience that truly leans into what virtual reality can be like. In this game, time only moves when you do; as long as you stand still, the world around you will be as still as you are. This means that when you move even a little bit, time starts up again, and so do your enemies. Superhot VR truly shows how immersive VR gaming can be.

VR Multiplayer Games: Playing With Friends
friends playing a VR multiplayer game

As virtual reality technology becomes more affordable, more people are getting in on the fun of playing immersive and interactive VR games. But just because you have a VR headset on doesn’t mean that you can’t play with your friends and family. While many of the most popular games are designed to be played alone, there are plenty of VR multiplayer games available for all of the different headsets out there. Some of the most popular multiplayer games include:

  • Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes: This is a fun VR game to play with friends and family who wouldn’t consider themselves gamers. One person is wearing a VR headset, and that person is alone with the bomb. The rest of the people playing have a manual in front of them that gives instructions for how to defuse the bomb, but they can’t see what the bomb looks like. This game requires good communication and tensions can run high, but it is a game that is best played with a group, either in person or over Discord.
  • POPULATION: ONE: For players who enjoy the battle royale genre, this game brings that experience into virtual reality. Join a three-person squad and take on this shooter game with a premise similar to Fortnite, complete with a similar building system. But this game also has climbing and gliding, letting you scale structures for a better view or to claim the high ground, which sets it apart from similar games. Team up with your friends to take down the other people on the map and be the last squad standing.
  • Onward: Fans of Call of Duty and Battlefield will flock to Onward‘s virtual military simulation. Join up into teams of up to five to battle other players with an array of weapons, multiple game modes, and plenty of custom features, including community-created content.
  • Arizona Sunshine: This VR game is a multiplayer zombie shootout. Unlike many games with a campaign mode, this game allows you to play both the campaign and a wave-based horde mode either solo or with friends. However, it does not support cross-platform play, so you need to make sure that everyone has the same headset.
  • Phasmophobia: There aren’t many horror VR multiplayer games, but Phasmophobia is easily one of the best of what’s out there. Players are part of a ghost-hunting team collecting evidence at each location to figure out what sort of ghost is present. Teammates work together to find clues, and good communication is a must. Just be careful: The ghosts can hear you, and they’re not likely to take kindly to intruders!
  • Payday 2: Live out the fast-paced and high-stakes thrill of performing a heist without worrying about going to jail. In this game, you work together with three friends to pull off a flawless mission using elements of stealth and first-person shooting. There are plenty of different heist locations, so you can try your hand at robbing a bank, emptying a yacht, or taking a casino for all it’s worth.

These games only scratch the surface of multiplayer games available in VR. No matter what kinds of games you and your friends like, you’re sure to find something that fits your tastes.

About the Most Popular Rhythm VR Game: Beat Saber

Beat Saber is one of the most popular VR games out there. It’s a rhythm game that’s reminiscent of top-selling games like Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and Dance Dance Revolution. Like in these other games, popular songs are featured, and the gamer has to hit a series of colored symbols in time with the music in the right sequence, direction, and color. Unlike previous rhythm games, Beat Saber uses VR to make the action more immersive than ever. Your controllers become two lightsabers of different colors, and you have to swing and duck your way through the course as the game guides you in a dance. There’s so much movement that many people have reported losing weight after playing a lot of Beat Saber.

Beat Saber can be set to multiple difficulties for players of all skill levels. Songs are made specifically for Beat Saber, but packs from popular artists are available, too. New songs are released regularly. You can play against a friend with a VR headset or join an online game to compete against random players. This game is fun, versatile, and a real crowd-pleaser. Some songs, like “FitBeat,” are designed specifically to help you break a sweat, so you might be able to add this game to your workout routine. If you’re one of the best of the best, you’ll be able to see your high scores on the leaderboard that updates in real-time.
