Microsoft Removes Public Spaces in Altspace

A couple days ago, Altspace revealed, in a blog post, that they will be taking down their public spaces. This move indicates that they are becoming completely focused on the events aspect of their platform. With this move, they are also adding some additional safety features for new users.

Its hard to imagine a social VR platform without public spaces. A huge part of social VR is going into some random room and talking with some random people. That being said, Altspace has found success focusing on hosting events, so this move makes sense for them. I’m someone who prefers the public environments more than the events, so I feel keeping public spaces available wouldn’t hurt them. But maybe it makes the platform more appealing to families and to parents with children who are on the platform.
