I get this question often about worlds I’ve made. I don’t really understand the interest, but its a very common question. People often ask it about The Black Cat. As you might guess, the answer is, it depends. There really is no definitive answer for how long it takes to build a VR world.
Typically it takes me about 1 to 2 months to complete a world. My worlds are pretty similar in size and most of them can be described as hangout spaces. The Black Cat has gone through many updates, but the initial build was around this same time frame. The spaces I model are always from scratch. I focus most of my time on modeling, but sometimes working in a game engine can be just as time consuming.
Programming, lighting, materials, and optimization are just some of the many things you will need to do in the game engine. Its possible to spend a week modeling everything you need for a world, and then spend months getting everything to work right in the game engine. It all depends on what you need to do for the specific space.
